Music Performance: Writing about music: is it beyond words?
“Music expresses that whichcannot be put into words and cannot remain silent” – Victor Hugo
Whilst performers do not have to put into word what they do, in music education words that explain the difference in sound that result in an artistic experience will provide inspiration and learning to our Year 12 students. The vocabulary lists suggested in the presentation will provide a starting point for discussion, reflection and evaluation of music listening for performance for analysis of listening. Whilst responding to music may be beyond words at the highest level, words will enable discussion that raises awareness and perception in music, and challenge the thinking of a typical Year 12 student.
The following pdf file is made up of two worksheets for developing writing skills when responding to excerpts of music previously unheard. One worksheet focuses on making critical responses, and the other on blend.

Music Performance: Expressive Elements of Music
A paper was presented clarifying the Expressive Elements of Music, terms used in the VCE Music Performance Study Design, Units 1-4 2011-2016. These elements were the focal point of content in Section B of the end-of-year Written and Aural Examination Paper 2011-2016.
Consider the Expressive Elements of Music as the elements that performers have the “freedom” to use. The Elements of Music are those set by the creators of the work, in particular the composers and are “non-negotiable”.
